We’re proud to announce Reusable Credentials using Civic Pass.

Ultimately, Reusable Credentials will allow for a massive UX simplification, making signing up for services or completing transactions far easier for users. The efficiencies may also translate into cost savings for businesses.

With Reusable Credentials, users verify their personal information once, and then that information is referenced or shared every time they conduct a new transaction, whether financial, renting a car, using a home rental service or otherwise. It means users can stop the relentless cycle of entering in personal information over and over and over.

At Civic, our Reusable Credentials work by allowing users to create a verified credential with their email, government-issued ID or Proof of Personhood. The credential is stored with Civic using end-to-end encryption, and a representation of that credential, a Civic Pass, is stored in their Web3 wallet. A Civic Pass is a private, non-transferable token that does not contain sensitive information.

When the user conducts a new transaction, the Civic Pass in their wallet signals to the dApp that the user’s credentials are valid. By re-using verified credentials, the dApp is saving time for the user and reducing friction during their experience. The user can also benefit from using previously verified credentials across multiple services where the credentials are accepted.

The dApp, which may be required by law to store personal information about the user, may collect required credentials for their compliance program. The credentials are encrypted and stored off-chain. In this way, the dApp is able to follow local laws related to KYC and AML, give their users a better experience and may also discover cost savings, due to reduced operational overhead.

In the future, we foresee that reusable verified credentials will be used for just about any credential, including university degrees, employee access cards, gym memberships and more. Further, we believe it’s one of the most promising tools our industry has when it comes to fighting AI-generated identity fraud.
